Read p. 37-44 in the text... (you can access that in SchoolNet (https://philasd.org)
then answer these questions:

- How did the Atlantic Slave trade change or impact Europe's economy? GIve specific examples

Who is Olaudah Equiano?
Captured far from the African coast when he was a boy of 11, Olaudah Equiano was sold into slavery, later acquired his freedom, and, in 1789, wrote his widely-read autobiography, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African.
We will use his story to highlight the story of the Middle Passage / Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade

Equiano Visual Timeline Project
Visual Timeline of Equiano’s Experience in the MIddle Passage
Students are to work as a class and create a Visual and Audio Timeline of Equiano’s Journey into slavery.
Choose a moment, event or important aspect of this narrative and do one of the following:
The class will work together to put all the events in chronological order on a large sheet of butcher paper.

To get started...
In Groups:
Choose a theme (Early Life, Kidnapping and Slave Ship) and create 4 or 5 main scenes or events that tell Equiano’s story.
Then combine with the other groups doing the same theme and narrow it down.
Assign drawings, narratives, poems, etc...
Work as a class to cover all aspects of the Middle Passage...
Students are to work as a class and create a Visual and Audio Timeline of Equiano’s Journey into slavery.

- Draw a picture detailing the event
- Write a poem describing the feelings of Equiano
- Create a narrative or a dialogue between Equiano and one or several other peopl
- Create symbols or signs that bring out the emotion or the feelings of this life at a particular moment or event.
