- According to the reading there are a number of reasons for blacks to be “loyalists” and fight for the British. Discuss several of these reasons.
- Discuss Washington’s decision not to hire blacks to fight in his Continental Army. What are some reasons he changed his mind?

- When congress issued the statement to fill their units "by drafts, from their militia, or in any other way” in what ways did states meet their quotas?
- Explain the difference between serving in the state militia vs. the Continental Army? Which would your rather do?
- Congress initiated the Militia Act which required only the enlistment of free blacks and only with proper paperwork/certificates. Why was this important?
- What is the Phillipsburg Declaration? And how did it help the British?
- By 1778 Washington changed his mind and started to approve black soldiers. Why did he find this necessary now?
- Many wealthy citizens and plantation owners would enlist with a substitute? What is this?
- Explain Sumter’s Law.

- Filmmakers use a storyboard to show the narrative and sequence of the film before they shoot it. It is similar to the ways in which a comic book tells a story. Create a storyboard for the increasing need of blacks in the revolutionary war. (at least 4 panels)
- Create several political cartoons highlighting opposing views of the decisions to use blacks in the Revolutionary War.
- In groups create a picture book where each student draws one picture (briefly annotated) in order to form together to create a book amongst your group. Imagine this would be published for children)
